Two Arab Americans appointed to Anaheim Electoral Advisory Committee

Two Arab-Americans were appointed to serve on the Anaheim Electoral Advisory Committee. Mayor Tom Tain appointed Little Arabia businessman and former Anaheim City Council candidate Belal Dalati while Kris Murray appointed Joseph Karaki.
The committee will form recommendations on a potential move from at-large council election to districts, whereby the city council members would be elected to represent specific areas. The committee will also make recommendations on ways to increase electoral participation among residents.
A group of activists and the ACLU sued the city arguing that the current system violates the 2001 California Voting Rights Act because Latinos are underrepresented. Unrest in Anaheim erupted in July after police shot and killed two young Latino men, which prompted activists to demand reforms in the council’s structure and city’s police department.
